What is content optimization?
The method by which we improvise our content for both SEO and reader friendly, is called content optimization.
Why is content optimization important?
When we write any content, one of our primary objectives is to distribute the content to the largest possible target audience. But how is this possible?
This is only possible when we optimize our content to be more SEO and user friendly so they can rank organically on the search result page.
How do I optimize my content?
Search engines like Google focus on several ranking factors before indexing any website. Some of the key factors are optimized title, meta description, keyword distribution, internal linking, backlinks and many more.
There are almost 200 ranking factors. Content optimization is one of them. To do successful content optimization, we need to monitor several things while writing. Let’s have a look into these:
- Include primary keywords
- Include related keywords
- Maintain keyword density
- Use of H1 and other tags
- Length of content (word count)
- Internal Linking
- External Linking
- Content Readability Score
- Grammar and Vocabulary
On the above bullet points, I have mentioned some important parameters which are the primary factors. There are several factors.
Now the question is how to monitor these several factors while writing?
The good news is, there are a couple of tools available on the internet. In this guide, I am going to share a tutorial on how to use those tools to optimize content successfully.
Process of Content Optimization 1: Use SEMrush
SEMrush is an all-in-one SEO tool specially designed for SEO professionals. This is one of my favourite tools. Almost each and every day I use this tool at least once a day. SEMrush covers so many improvements and this is why it is called an all-in-one SEO tool.
In today’s guide, I am going to explore SEO WRITING ASSISTANT which is specially designed to create SEO optimized content. If you want to explore more, you can refer to my review on how to use SEMrush for SEO improvement.

Okay. Let me come to the present tutorial. To explore SEO WRITING ASSISTANT, you need to Create a FREE account on SEMrush. Once you are logged in, just follow the steps below.
- On the DASHBOARD (left side) click on SEO WRITING ASSISTANT
- Then click on GET RECOMMENDATIONS (Green button)
On the left side, you can write or paste anything. When you write in this editor, you will get a score (right side) based upon the quality of the content.
To make this more understandable I have copied some text from Wikipedia on “social media management”. Have a look into the screenshot below

Now what have you observed from the above screenshot?
Well, as you can see, this content has received a score of 4.5 out of 10. And what I can assure you is that the score clearly indicates the content needs to improve in several areas. Otherwise this will not hit the organic search.
I always try to optimize my content as per these suggestions so that search engines love my content. Let me help you to understand the process of optimizing one-by-one.
SEO Improvement: As an SEO lover, I would like to improve my SEO opportunities first. Then we will learn how to increase the readability score for the best user experience.
To do so, I have clicked on the SEO button (right side) to get suggestions as below.
P.S.- Here my target keyword is “social media management”.
As mentioned, my target keyword is “social media management”, here SEMrush is suggesting to enrich the content with these related keywords.
But from where did these keywords come from?
Well, these are the best keywords used by the top 10 competitors in this specific keyword (i.e. Social Media Management). SEMrush is so smart that it analyses competitors first and shows improvement recommendations as per analysed data.
This intelligent tool is designed to take care of organic search engine rankings. So, here is a tip for you. If you are writing a blog post on social media management, don’t forget to include these suggested keywords.
This is another checklist if I have designed my blog post with these top recommended keywords or not. If not, I should use them immediately.
For example, look at the above screenshot where the keyword “social networks” has been coloured green by SEMrush itself. This means this keyword is already included and doesn’t need to be added further.
Points 3 and 4
Now we have an understanding of keywords which to include in blog posts and which to ignore.
But, is it really necessary to include all those keywords?
This section will help to check the difficulty level of those keywords and decide if we need to include those or not.
Let’s say, I have decided to include “social media strategy” in the existing content. When I place the mouse pointer on the keyword, SEMrush is suggesting that the keyword has a high difficulty rate (i.e. 74.53%). This means, if I include this keyword into my blog post, I may face high competition in organic search.
My competitors have already done a great job with these high difficulty keywords and already ranked in search results. If I choose these keywords, it will become very difficult for me to break the search result.
This is why I always choose those keywords which have a low difficulty rate. However, you can choose your as per your requirements.
I can download all the suggested keywords in CSV format to use later.
Optimised content should include a relevant image which makes the content more interesting and user friendly. In fact, search engines love visual content in between blog posts.
For example, you can refer to my blog post where I use screenshots of every important step to make my blog post more understandable for readers like you.
Now I hope you have an idea on how SEMrush analyses competitor’s content so that we can make our blog post better than them.
Readability Improvement: As per the latest algorithm update from Google, readability scores have become an important ranking factor for organic search results. Both users and search engines like content that has a good readability score. Hence it is equally important to create content user friendly as well as SEO.
What can we learn from the above screenshot?
SEMrush suggested improving the score to at least 50.2 based upon the top 10 organic search results. The only way to increase this score is improvement of point no 8 and 9.
To break the top 10 organic search results, this content should be written in 1526 words. But my content is written in 445 words only. Then I should focus on creating more content enriching with those suggested keywords.
This section indicates the types of issues that need to be improved. In this example, I have found 3 types of suggestions. Let’s explore those.
(Note: The number of suggestions will vary based upon what content you have written)
Splitting long paragraphs is really necessary. Otherwise, readers may lose their patience while reading the complete article. It is recommended to include 4-5 sentences in a single paragraph.
Rewriting hard to read sentences are those which include too much passive voice or adjectives. Always try to write as simply as you talk with people in a normal conversation.
Replace words that are too complex otherwise, the audience may not understand all the points you want to cover in your blog post.
When I click on a suggestion in point no 9, SEMrush editor marks that specific word or sentence so that I can find it easily. This is really helpful and time-saving support.

Process of Content Optimization 2: Use Hemingway Editor
Hemingway Editor is not as powerful as SEMrush. Basically this tool helps to improve the readability and user experience. But still it is the perfect solution in view of proof-readers.
Just navigate to the official website and paste your content to improve.
What benefits can we expect from this editor?
As you can see from the above screenshot, this editor automatically underlined the problematic sentences and words and shared its suggestion to optimise. Just read all these suggestions and start changing your content accordingly.
I always aim to get 3-5 Grade as a decent writing score in my content. As per your requirement, you can target your own Remember, the lower grade indicates a sign of better content.
Process of Content Optimization 3: Use Frase
Frase is another AI powered tool which helps quickly to create brief content. Within seconds, I get lots of content topics and subtopic suggestions.
Before entering into the tutorial, create a FREE account on Frase.
Once you have logged in, click on CONTENT and then NEW DOCUMENT. Fill in the data as per your requirement.
What is this data?
Okay, let me explain this.
Search Query: Write your target keyword on which you want to rank.
Workflow: You can write a new article or you can just import some of your article already published on the internet
Search Type: If you choose the TOP GOOGLE RESULTS option, you will get suggestions based upon the top 10- 20 competitor’s website. Otherwise, you can select RESULTS FROM SPECIFIC DOMAIN to compete with a single competitor.
For example, I will check the content optimization opportunity for an article “Backlink” published in Wikipedia. Hence, I will write “Backlink” in the search query box as it is my target keyword.
For the WORKFLOW option, I will choose IMPORT AND OPTIMIZE CONTENT option as I am going to submit a link from Wikipedia which is already published.
After setting up all the above things, just click on CREATE DOCUMENT.
As I have shared a link, this tool has started to import all the texts from Wikipedia. Just click on CONFIRM IMPORT.
P.S.- If required, you can change texts at this stage. Also, you can change it later.
Here is the data for your reference. I have selected all the texts which helped me to know the total word count (i.e. 747).
If you have a look on the right side, I have found the following data.
Source Processed 19 means the data has been found based on the top 19 websites which have an Average Word Count of 811 (where mine is 747). That means, I have to write this article with at least 811 words.
Now the question is what should I write?
Whatever you write should be related to your existing topic. Frase suggests amazing suggestions when I look for related topics. Keep your eyes open to the right side of the Frase editor.
To be more specific, I have clicked on the TOPIC option, which shows that my content has a low TOPIC SCORE (i.e. 19%). This content needs to include keywords like Link Building, Link Profile, Quality Backlinks and many more (check the above screenshot).
If you want to include questions in your content, this suggestion might be helpful for you. Because now you have a list of top questions that answers which your competitors are using in their blog post. None of them may include all the possible questions into their content. But you can do this.
Just go through all the questions and include them into your content to create the best solution on a specific topic.
Process of Content Optimization 4: Use Grammarly
How would you feel if you had the freedom to write anything?

How does Grammarly work?
When I start anything, I get an editing view as shown in the above screenshot. On the right side, I keep my eye as this section will indicate my mistakes and errors while writing.
Point 1: Indicates the phrases need correction and overall writing score.
Point 2: Indicates the task as what to do.
Point 3: Take action to correct the phrase. (Don’t worry, you will get suggestions once you hover the mouse pointer)
Point 4: Indicates total word counts.
As you can see from the above screenshot, Grammarly is available on several platforms like Windows, Google Chrome, Microsoft Office, Smart Phone and iPad. I am using this tool in my Google Chrome, iPhone and iPad.
If English is not your primary language, Grammarly is a must use tool for you.
There are no end-of-number content optimization tools available over the internet. I have shown possibly the best methods that can be used for the process of content optimization. It’s you who decides which method is more helpful for you. I will keep updating this tutorial once I discover a new tool.
